Is so sorry that he could not visit him while in New York; soon he will lecture in the east, than he will come to visit; was three week in New York at the request of Scribner & Son to write his book "Silouettes of France", since he just returned from there; also sold 6 stories to the Outlook; can't wait to read Markham's new writing.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
